community is everything
As proud as I am of our teachings, curriculum, course structure and being called the Hogwarts of DJ Schools … our community is even cooler.
When I started out in 2009, it was the generous friends, occasionally friendly sound techs and precious groups of grateful dancers who gave me feedback, tips and the courage to keep going.
The support of a joyful, beloved community on the same wild ride as you is one of the most priceless assets you’ll ever have as an artist. When you join PhDJ, you join a creative cohort of folks dedicated to the same thing as you — and it keeps going after you graduate.
More updates and mixes from our grads are coming soon. Here’s a few to get you started:
what our grads are up to
-
MICHAEL V (Catskill, NY)
Recent highlights: Sold out his 3 year anniversary of Primal Disco in Upstate NY, brought Primal Disco to NYC, DJ’d at SOHO Beach House in Miami AND sold out Medicine Disco (my answer to ecstatic dance)
-
LEXX (Bristol, UK)
Recent highlights! Lexx played gigs in LA, NYC and Porto, Portugal, and sold out my first Soft Butch co-produced event in another city in less than two weeks. Mix wise, Lexx really loved this, it was so damn fun. It’s from an event called "Midnight Mass", which combined dancing and Queer cabaret turning all things Christmas and Christian into very kinky, Queer and trans performances.
-
SHOSHI (Calabasas, CA)
Graced the stage at BOOM festival in Portugal right before serving as the resident DJ on Michael Franti’s SoulShine Cruise. Trying not to be jealous over here. Here’s the mix from BOOM! Read the comments — basically everyone’s favorite set/moment of one of the worlds most legendary festivals. So proud of you, love.
-
JUSTINE (Cobourg, Canada)
She ran two five-week therapeutic dance groups for her clients with trauma and OCD in her practice as a psychiatrist, and she celebrated the 1 year anniversary of her monthly ecstatic dance. For her tiny town, the numbers are unprecedented! She was also scouted to join a lineup of female DJs and invited to DJ a series of conscious dance + soundbath events. She was also invited to DJ two dances for the International School of Temple Arts (ISTA) North American Gathering in New York - an immersion at the intersection of embodiment, sexuality, and spirituality. This was a magical highlight for her! Her recent favorite mix is here!
-
JESS HERE (New York City, NY)
Recently sold out her first Dancing Waves experience and here’s what they said … “Those amazing transitions ... the fusion was just spectacular.” // “You confirmed that music truly is a universal language” // “The breath work and movement ignited a fire inside that helped me let loose” // “More of Jess please!” Recent highlights include playing at Soft Butch in Bristol, UK, DJing in Montreal and co launching a monthly party with Jessica Chaos called Triple D’s (DJ’s! Drag! & Dancing!) at Club Cumming. Her recent favorite mix is here!
-
ALIZA (Diamanté Valley, Costa Rica)
Just graduated 10 women from the second cohort of her movement school, and the next round is open for enrollment!. She’s also hosted a women’s retreat in Costa Rica this February. She’s been revolutionizing the ecstatic dance scene all over Costa Rica, and got to tour the states this fall. This mix from PDX E Dance (Peace Prayer) is magnificent.
-
BACKBACK JESUS
Has launched an underground phenomenon in Montreal. There are no links to share because his marketing strategy is zero pictures or public promo which is somehow completely working. What kind of DJ do you have to be to start a purely word of mouth revoution? This kind.
-
VIC (Pittsburgh, PA)
Vic was given the incredible opportunity to close out the Symposium for Wellbeing with Connect at Phipps Conservatory with one of her somatic dances. They launched a monthly "somatic magic queer dance party" called Refuge at The Glitterbox Theater and are working on our third event, Pisces Party. Listen to their 41st Birthday Bash!
-
GLEN (Washington, DC)
Has quickly become a resident opening DJ at the biggest gay club in DC (Bunker) and continues to DJ at DC clubs like Crush. His mobile silent disco event THE JOURNEY which moves through downtown Washington DC was featured on NBC! His favorite recent gig has to be Burning Man with BAAHS and Glamcocks. How can you top djing naked on a giant sheep art car?!? He’s also designing the Glamcocks initiation ritual, something he never would have been able to do before PHDJ.
-
CLAY PAPA (Charlotte, NC)
Didn’t reply to my ask for updates cuz she's on a social media sabbatical but this mix is so delicious I had to dig it up and share it anyway.
-
ATARA (Brooklyn, NY)
Recently hosted Dance for Peace in Brooklyn … and y’all must watch one of the best reactions to a set I’ve ever seen (also Dance for Peace, the comments). What’s that all about?? Witness Mixtress Atara, serving everything from Epic Fxing Dance Parties to deep titrated nervous system loving flowtimes.
-
INMAR (Toronto, Canada)
Inmar just played a 3-hour set for 150 people at her first international gig at Waabi’s 2024 Holiday party. She also got to play her own brew of facilitated ecstatic dance promoting playful connections and solo exploration during a witch festival in Ontario. Check out her
-
DEVON (Louisville, KY)
Devon successfully launched his first event series Neon Jungle to overwhelmingly positive feedback and a wildly untamed dance floor. He also played another highlight set at his favorite local yoga festival Mypath.
-
TAI (Fairfield, CT)
Tai is currently prepping for a Dance x Healing retreat that brings together dance sessions with group connection to allow retreat participants to work deeply with embodiment, nervous system regulation, personal goals and healing work. She loves feeling confident putting together mixes and playing live, and continues to integrate her training both on the dance floor and in her therapeutic work. Check out her SoundCloud here.
-
JESSICA CHAOS (Union City, NJ)
Jessica Chaos’ favorite part of doing the DJ thing in NYC is making so many awesome new friends and sharing this great love for music and dance. She’s locked down a successful monthly DJ/drag residency at Club Cumming, bringing in new + old friends (including many PhDJs!) to wield the decks every month. Check out one her favorite mixes here.
-
KATYA (Brooklyn, NY)
Katya recently DJed at Art Basel on a Mega Yacht at Basel Waves: Oceans of Influence hosted by We Are DFL (www.wearedfl.com) for 100+ impact founders and leaders. She also launched her new DJ website www.djspasiba.com, and has produced eight Resonance Gatherings in NYC in 2024 with over 1000 dancers!
-
ZIAD (Medellin, Colombia)
Ziad’s favorite highlight so far this year is joining the PhDJ team as tech support! He also recently played his best set to date by far – just two days after recovering from a difficult medical condition! Plus, him and two friends played to a full house for the first iteration of their monthly Lumina series of events in Medellín, Colombia. Check it out here!
-
RENN (Bozeman, MT)
Most recent favorite DJ memory: Playing a spontaneous all-night set at a party in the middle of a canyon deep in Utah’s desert. We danced all night long with our howls echoing off the canyon walls. Check out the IG post here!.
Ashley
PhDJ 2.0, Apprentice
“It took a lot for me to give myself permission to invest a ton of time, energy, money into believing that’s something that I could do.
I needed structure, community and accountability in my life. When she told me it was a seven month program I was like … I think I need that.
What if I made the thing that I’m most passionate about, the thing that brings me the most joy, #1?”

“Before I joined PhDJ, I had never considered DJing and now that I look back on it, that's kind of silly because I've been obsessed with music my whole life.
I listen to music in a totally new way now. I've become more confident since starting this training. Definitely more confident in the authentic expression of myself. I'm learning new things about my body and the way that I like to move. I'm learning different ways to move. I feel so supported and encouraged in this space, and I love getting to face my fears in the company of all these fine humans in this cohort.
If you're thinking about joining PhDJ and something in you is, is kind of either gently or aggressively pushing you towards this, my advice is lean the f**k in.”

“Being on the controller made my whole timeline of life perfect. It’s a life changer. I’ve impacted lives and I’m using this as a vehicle to transform my life, and it’s happening. It’s opened up so many doors for me and added peace and light into my life.”
